Louisville City FC president Djorn Buchholz resigns

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The president of the budding USL-Pro soccer team Louisville City FC has resigned, according to a press release from the club Tuesday afternoon.

Djorn Buchholz has been at the helm since August and has overseen much of the development of the club. Buchholz came to Louisville from MLS team Sporting Kansas City where he was the director of fan experience.

Owner Wayne Estopinal praised Buchholz for his "positive contributions" to the club and said Buchholz just decided to pursue "other opportunities that are more to his liking."

"It's important that you like what you do," Estopinal explained. "It's a tough deal to be out here starting a business in a league that's doubled in size...the management side is maybe a little daunting."

The press release stated, "With the rapid expansion of the USL in the last few months, new USL conference structure, and league's emphasis on managing a much more complex and expansive management role, Mr. Buchholz elected to pursue other sports management opportunities."

"He's been really good," Estopinal said. "I think he's hired a great staff...he's put the franchise in a very good spot."

Vice President of Operations Amanda Duffy will move into a general manager role. Duffy joined the LCFC staff in October, she previously served as the commissioner for the USL Women's League.

The minor league soccer team is scheduled to start play in March of 2015 at Louisville Slugger Field. Estopinal said Duffy has the qualifications to serve as a manger, but that they will consider how best to move forward with their staffing.

Estopinal noted Buchholz's contribution to developing "the social aspect" of the club and involving the Louisville Coopers supporters group at every step. The Coopers posted a statement about Buchholz's resignation on their website.

"We also look forward to working with Amanda Duffy as move towards our inaugural season, and we have full confidence in her abilities," The Coopers said via Twitter.
