Dog may be euthanized to comply with late owner's will

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Indiana dog owner wanted her ashes mixed with those of her beloved dog so the two can be together for eternity.

There's just one problem -- the dog isn't dead yet.

When Connie Lay died, her dog, Bella, was taken to a nearby pet facility in Dearborn County.

Lay's attorneys say Bella will need to be put down to comply with her late owner's wishes. The executor of her will has the authority to mandate that because animals are considered property.

Bella was supposed to be euthanized Tuesday, but an outcry from the community led to a delay.

Attorneys say the alternate option listed in Lay's will is to send Bella to a no-kill shelter in Utah, but it's not financially feasible.

Several people have volunteered to adopt Bella, but only the executor of Lay's will can decide what to do with the dog.
