LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- JCPS has identified the substitute teacher accused of assaulting a student Tuesday at J.B. Atkinson Elementary.

Brenda Brown is a retired JCPS teacher who served in the district for 30 years as a full-time teacher, according to district spokesperson Helene Kramer.

Brown taught in the district between 1978 and 2008 and began substituting for the district in 2014.

According to Kramer, Brown does not have any previous discipline notices in her file.

Brown has been suspended from substituting in the district during the investigation.

When alerted the incident, Principal Stephanie Nutter called JCPS's Compliance Department and the Security Department, which is now investigating.

Principal Nutter also notified Child Protective Services, which turned the case over to the LMPD Crimes Against Children Unit.

The alleged incident happened at J.B. Atkinson Elementary on Monday in the Portland neighborhood and the district says the substitute is no longer allowed on property.

One student in the classroom says the incident happened after other kids started acting up.

"She kept on calling people ignorant and retarded and she punched a kid," the student told WDRB Tuesday.

The principal and her staff immediately spoke with others who witnessed what happened.

District spokeswoman Helene Kramer says the principal escorted the teacher out of the building and the substitute is now banned from Atkinson property.
