Residents see new plan for West Broadway Walmart, developers say it can't be closer to street

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Residents got a look at what the new design for a Walmart coming to West Louisville on Thursday night.

Many residents at a packed meeting of the Planning Commission said they support the Walmart, but others were concerned about its design.

The store's original design at 18th and West Broadway was criticized for it's use of space. With the store pushed back from the road, it forced people without vehicles to traverse the large parking lots to get to the entrance.

Many pushed for an urban design. They said it would be closer to the sidewalk, would keep the area more active and would open up opportunities for other street-side businesses.

Developers working with Walmart say they've made every effort to make the design appealing to all, but they say it's not possible to move the store closer to the road on this site.

The landscaping plan includes hundreds of trees and shrubs, and they say it will be pedestrian friendly.

"It's important that this development provide employment opportunities for local residents, provide access to shopping and, most important, a jumpstart to expanded economic development," Teresa Bridgewaters, with NewBrige Development, said.

The owners of the property will keep two areas of the site for future development.

The commission will make decisions on requests and plans that were presented today.
