Long-serving St. Raphael principal departs after 40 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local principal got an unforgettable goodbye Friday, on his last day of school.

Doctor Paul DeZarn is retiring from St. Raphael School. He's been the principal there since 1975.

Students planned to have a "clap out", to give him a high five before he left the school.

But it quickly changed to a "hug out" and there were a lot of tears from everyone watching, and even some of the students.

Dezarn said he'll always have fond memories of his students.

"People say how can you do it so long?" He said at the ceremony. "When I would give tours and I would simply say come walk with me. Walk through these halls. Look at the glow in their eyes. Look at the interaction of the teachers and the engagement of the students."

DeZarn said he's seen more than 7,000 students go through the school over the past 40 years.

He hopes the school will continue to hire great teachers, so that the students are successful.
