2 New York City cops dead in ambush shooting

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) - Officials say a second New York City officer has died after a gunman ambushed them inside their patrol car before committing suicide.

The shooting took place Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Both officers were rushed to Woodhull hospital, where officials say they were pronounced dead.

The two officials, a senior city official and a law enforcement official, had direct knowledge of the deaths but were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Police Commissioner William Bratton choked up at a news conference Saturday afternoon as he talked about the shootings.

Bratton says gunman Ismaaiyl Brinsley shot and wounded his former girlfriend in Baltimore earlier Saturday and made "anti-police" posts from her Instagram account.

Authorities didn't get into the specifics of the contents of the posts, but two officials told The Associated Press that he posted about shooting two "pigs" in retaliation for the death of Eric Garner. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Bratton added that the two officers "were, quite simply, assassinated."

Authorities say the gunman fatally shot himself after killing the officers.
