Mild temperatures and rain delay opening of Paoli Peaks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Paoli Peaks might be able to make it snow in Paoli, Indiana, but they still can't manufacture the low temperatures required for them to open.

"The goal was to open December 13th," said Lauren Grenier, Director of Marketing and Administration at Paoli Peaks.

The ski resort was hoping for a White Christmas, which would bring in a lot of green.

"It's a little rough not being open for Christmas week," said Grenier.

It's hit or miss, depending on what nature decides to do. Last winter was harsh and unforgiving, but perfect for Paoli.

"It was just cold all the time, we had snow, a lot of snow. it was fantastic," Grenier recalled. "Hopefully, once winter actually gets here it'll stay that way."

Workers getting around on snowmobiles are plowing through slushy snow, made by special fans.

"Our first time making snow was December 17th, last week. As you can see, we've made some, but this weather coming in and all of that dreadful rain, kind of leaves us with the question of when we will actually open," said Grenier.

Serving around 90,000 customers a year, Paoli Peaks will alert skiers online once an opening day is set.

"Historically there's been times Paoli Peaks hasn't opened until after the new year," she added. "Hopefully that's not going to be the case, we don't think it will be. Sunday looks like pretty good snow making temperatures."

The ski resort hopes to make an assessment Christmas Day so they can fire the snowmakers up again to make more snow and plan an opening day. "We just need some cold temperatures, water and our fan guns."

Paoli Peaks officials are planning a New Year's Eve party on the slopes, but only if the resort is open. It will be family friendly, with skiing, fireworks, and a complimentary sparking grape juice toast. No alcohol will be served and the party will go until 2 a.m.
