Southeast Bullitt Fire Protection District Board holds emergency meeting

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - An emergency meeting for the Southeast Bullitt  Fire Protection District Board took place Tuesday evening.

Instead of occurring at the main fire house, it was held at the Best Western in Shepherdsville.

Board members made the decision to have current lawyer, Jeff Freeman, handle only the current taxpayer lawsuits against the fire department and the district.

Board member David Blakeman said, "I think he would be a conflict of interest if he served the fire department, which he is now signed on to, and us also. I don't see any way he can be anything other than a conflict of interest."

The board cited a conflict of interest with Freeman because he also represents the Fire Department and its board.

All future lawsuits will now be handled by Louisville attorney, Maurice Byrne.

The decision comes one week after the Board held its first meeting without embattled Fire Chief Julius Hatfeld. He remains on paid leave.

The current taxpayer lawsuits are set to go to court in February.
