Family pleads for donations after mother's death

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An elderly woman police say was found covered in bed bugs, fleas, feces and urine earlier this month has died.

Family members say Sheila Self passed away Wednesday. Her daughter, Melissa Self, is behind bars facing a charge of neglecting an adult.

Shelia Self's son, Ricky Self, says he had no idea what was going on behind the walls of the apartment his mom and sister shared because his mother always met him outside.

"I never gave much thought about it, but now I know," he said. "If I had known what the situation was, my mom would have been out of the house in a matter of minutes."

But Self believes his sister is not malicious. He thinks she is suffering from physical and mental health problems.

"My sister and my mother were real close," Self said. "For something to happen like this, there has to be an explanation because she wouldn't do nothing to hurt my mother. I know that deep down."

He says his mother didn't have life insurance and her death comes at a time when his budget is already strained buying Christmas gifts for five children. He knows she wanted to be buried, but right now they can only afford cremation.

"We came up with some of the money and some of the money has been donated from family and friends," he said. "We're just looking for some help if it's possible."

He says donations can be sent to Ratterman Family Funeral Home. He says his mother's funeral will likely be on Friday.
