Fans pack KFC Yum! Center for Battle of the Bluegrass

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Every single seat was filled as U of L took on Kentucky at the KFC Yum! Center Saturday. The game brought a nearly record breaking crowd. Attendance was 22,812, which is just three people short of breaking the arena's game record.

Even actress Jennifer Lawrence was there, cheering on the Cards.

It appeared people in red outnumbered those wearing blue, but the Cards couldn't win on the court. The final score was 58-50.

"I'm still here for you guys," said U of L fan Tannyetta Withers. "We will be back and we will win. Louisville Cards all day, yes!"

Nick Weldon is confident his team will continue winning. "Kentucky's number one," Weldon said. "They'll stay number one. They'll win it all."

U of L fans walked out of the arena without celebration. Some believe the Cards made mistakes.

"I guess if we had shot a little better, we would have won the game no doubt," Withers said.

U of L student Emily Campbell says the team could have used more substitutions.

You could say a few Kentucky fans couldn't hide their excitement. One Cats fan told WDRB News, "We're having Cardinal stew tonight!"

But no matter which side won, it was a win for downtown businesses.

George Timmering, who owns Bearno's Pizza on Main Street, says it's all about the green, not the blue or red. Timmering says the game brings in double to triple the amount of customers compared to a normal Saturday.

"Two years ago when they played here it was a record day so we love it when we play," Timmering said. "We're looking forward to inviting the blue back in March for the first round of the NCAA tournament."

Cards fans are also looking to the future. Hoping the next time these teams meet, the outcome will be different.
