LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a now-former UPS employee after he stole over $500 worth of goods so he could use them as Christmas gifts.

According to an arrest report, 20-year-old Dalton E. Anderson was a security employee at the logistics giant.

Police say that earlier in the month, some of Anderson's coworkers found opened packages in the trash. They eventually set up cameras in the trash area, and police say Anderson was recorded as he threw open packages away.

When he was confronted about his actions, Anderson allegedly provided a written statement admitting to taking over $500 worth of property from packages between Dec. 9 and Dec. 24.

He allegedly told police he took the merchandise so he could use it as Christmas gifts for his family.

The stolen items included $50 Amazon gift cards, and jewelry, according to the arrest report. Police say he was found with seven $50 Amazon gift cards on his person at the time of his written statement.

He was fired from his job. Police arrested him just before 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 26. He's charged with theft.
