Paoli Peaks opening for the 2014-15 season on New Year's Eve

PAOLI, Ind. (WDRB) -- The ski season can now begin at Paoli Peaks after officials had to delay the opening by more than two weeks.

"It's been an uphill battle. We've had Mother Nature against us a little bit this year," employee Sylvia Crick said.

Last winter, we saw a lot of snow and colder temperatures which was perfect for those wanting to hit the slopes.

This fall, mother nature hasn't been as kind.

Workers have been making snow with fans, but the warm and rainy weather has been a problem. So employees at the Pro Shop are more than ready.

"We have all the gear to get you ready to be out in the cold weather...goggles, hats, face masks, everything," said pro shop manager Toger Sobotka.

The snowmaking machines are on and nearby creek water is quickly being turned into snow.

"Something around 6,000 gallons a minute," Sobotka said. "Enough to fill a home swimming pool in three minutes."

"We'll have 55 percent of the trails open," said Crick. "We aren't at full capacity yet, but we're hoping as the day goes on and we continue to make snow that will grow."

Paoli Peaks opened Wednesday afternoon for skiers and snowboarders only.

Due to the lack of snow, tubing isn't allowed just yet.

Employees say it's the perfect way to ring in the New Year, with family friendly activities.

They're hoping snow and cold temperatures will soon be in the forecast to keep them open.
