Cab drivers, bars ready to profit from New Year's Eve

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Many people will celebrate the new year with alcohol. That means big bucks for the businesses providing drinks and for those who get people home safely.

With all the bars along it, Bardstown Road will be one of the busiest spots in town on New Year's Eve.

"It'll be a mob scene down there tonight," said ReadyCab driver Charles Lang. New Year's Eve is one of the most profitable nights for cab drivers. "If you could make this kind of money every day it'd be wonderful."

There is only one other night of the year that's a bigger money maker.

"Kentucky Derby is the busiest," said Lang. He will be working until about 6 a.m. picking up partiers who cannot drive themselves home. "You gotta make hay when the sun shines. Right now it's been kind of slow, we're going to stay out and try to get all the riders we can get," said Lang.

He says people may wait for hours for a cab. The drivers will stay busy all night. "A normal day in a whole day you might do 20 trips, but New Year's Eve you're going to do that many trips in a short period of time," Lang explained.

Taxicab and ridesharing apps are popular, but Lang has another tip. "I would call a cab an hour before, sometimes as soon as the ball drops," Lang suggested.

Phoenix Hill Tavern expects at least 2,000 people New Year's Eve, with drink specials.

"Our Wednesdays are always busy, and I anticipate three times as many people than our normal Wednesday, where we sometimes get shoulder to shoulder on our deck bar," said Bradley Scott Tharp, talent buyer with Phoenix Hill Tavern.

If you are going to drink, plan ahead. Lang says the average cab ride costs around $20-25 bucks. He says be mindful, when taxi cab drivers pull up they are scoping out who they want to pick up.

"The biggest thing I worry about is people throwing up in the taxi. But knock on wood I have never had that happen before."  Lang says another way to plan ahead save some taxi cab number into your phone so they are easy to find when you need them.
