Butchertown bar rings in New Year with grand opening

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Starting the New Year with new customers. Louis's "The Ton" made the last day of 2014 the first day for business on Wednesday.

"I've been eye balling this bar for a while," said customer Kyle Lloyd.

A lot of work has gone into getting the 'public house' up and running. The original date to open was Valentine's Day. Owner Emmanuel Dumigron says the historic building needed a lot of work.

"The foundation was non-existent. The walls were non-existent. The roof was collapsed. Every single plumbing and every single electrical line was broken," Dumigron told WDRB News.

He worked on the building himself with a couple of hired hands, calling the project a "labor of love." The building, on the corner of Story and Frankfort Avenues, dates back to the 1800s.

Dumigron says he loves the history, old style and charm that comes with Butchertown. Others are loving it too.

"Since we've been on this block, I've seen a tremendous amount of change here," Dumigron said.

Buildings on his block are being restored and a bed and breakfast is in the works just a few doors down, according to Dumigron.

Also in the neighborhood, developers have proposed a seven story apartment complex at Clay and Main Streets. Copper and Kings Distillery opened in Butchertown earlier this year.

Dumigron says he's working with the distillery to offer up specialized drinks at the bar.

In addition to mixed drinks, the pub serves up several tap beers, bottled beers, and European style meat and cheese plates. Dumigron also wants to keep pub prices, affordable.

"I've been very excited about having a pub back in Butchertown," Lloyd said. It's been long awaited but were really excited about it.

Louis's "The Ton" will be closed on New Year's day but after that, the bar be open seven days a week.
