LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Louisville Male High School's site-based decision making council voted unanimously 12-0 to select Jim Jury to be the school's next principal during a special-called meeting Monday night.

Jury has been the principal at Ballard High School since 2003, prior to that he was principal at Waggener High School. He also served as interim principal at Male last year for about two months at the request of Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Donna Hargens.

During that time, he served as a dual principal at both Ballard and Male.

The SBDM decision to select Jury still has to be finalized by Hargens, that move should happen by the end of the week. None of the 12 members of the site-based council wanted to talk about their selection, they all declined comment.

In an interview with WDRB on Monday night, Jury said making the decision to apply for the top job at Male was the "toughest thing I've had to do in my career."

"I love Ballard High School," he said. "But I have been there for 10 years now and I think this will be a great opportunity to not just move Male High School forward, but Ballard forward as well."

Male High has a student enrollment of nearly 1,800 students, while Ballard has an enrollment of 2,000 students.

"When I served as interim at Male, it gave me a chance to meet the staff and students," he said. "It is not an easy decision to leave Ballard, but I truly think there are things I can bring to Male that will help move the school forward and make it the best it can be."

At least three others interviewed for the top job at Male. Two of the candidates -- Matt Kingsley and Darryl Farmer -- are assistant principals at duPont Manual High School. The third candidate, Jose Alfaro, is an assistant principal at Hawthorne Elementary School.

Male High School has been without a full-time principal since June, when JCPS reassigned then-principal David Mike to a position in central office, pending the outcome of an investigation.

Mike was later fired from the district in October for "conduct unbecoming of a teacher." He appealed that decision to a state tribunal, but the tribunal upheld the district's decision in December.

Many of those at Ballard were shocked Monday night when they first heard the news that Jury had been named the principal at Male.

Ballard parent Melody Murphy said she is "super sad to hear this. He will be missed at Ballard."

Matthew Kinney, a senior at Ballard, said a lot of students will be disappointed.

"He is a great principal and we love him here," Kinney said.

Jury said he wishes that he would have had the opportunity to inform his staff, students and parents before word got out on social media.

"It would have been ideal to get ahead of it, but you never know what the decision will be until it's voted on," Jury said.
