LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Several numbers were working against the Indiana basketball team as they challenged Michigan State at the Breslin Center Monday night. The Hoosiers had won their first two Big Ten road games in only three of the last 21 seasons. And they had won just once in the last 19 seasons in East Lansing. Make it three for 22 and one in 20 as the Spartans bounced back from a loss to Maryland last Tuesday with a 70-50 rout of the Hoosiers.
Indiana missed 14 of its first 16 shots, fell behind 19-4 and never got the game closer than nine thereafter.Michigan State led by 19 at halftime and by as many as 30 in the second half, dominating in all phases including 50-28 on the boards.
“Michigan State did a real good job of getting us back on our heels early and we let them,” said IU coach Tom Crean. “I was disappointed we never pushed back and we picked a bad night to do that.”
Crean seemed especially disappointed with his big men. Hanner Mosquera-Perea who went scoreless in just 10 minutes.Troy Williams played 17 minutes and did not score.Yogi Ferrell was the only Hoosier in double figures with 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting. The Hoosiers (11-4, 1-1) hit a season-low 28 percent from the field.
Denzel Valentine had 15 for MSU (10-5, 1-1) while Branden Dawson added 14 including several thunderous dunks to go with 13 rebounds.
IU returns home for a game Saturday against Ohio State.
