UPDATE: Coroner identifies Fern Valley Hotel shooting victim
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A murder at the Fern Valley Hotel & Conference Center has left police searching for answers and a suspect.
Police were called to the Fern Valley hotel just after 11 a.m. Friday after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a male victim in a side parking lot. He was taken to U of L Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Sherman Edwards Jr. of Indianapolis, according Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley. Edwards died due to a gunshot wound to the chest, Wesley said.
Police are trying to find out where exactly the shooting happened.
"We're still trying to ascertain that information, exactly where it happened and where it began. We're still trying to get the sequence of events and how that took place according to witnesses," LMPD spokesperson Dwight mitchell said.
Hotel staff didn't want to talk on camera but said they've never had anything like this happen at the hotel before.
"I don't know that it's unusual. Nothing is anymore unfortunately," Mitchell said. "I don't know that there's been any here before. It's been some time if there was. Obviously in the middle of the day, that seems a little unusual."
Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell says detectives hope witnesses will lead them to a suspect.
"We're talking to witnesses and we believe we have very credible ones at this point that we're talking with and hopefully we can gain more information and if it's information we need to get out to the public, we will," said Mitchell.
Police said they don't believe hotel guests are in danger and it was business as usual at the hotel during the investigation Friday.
Surveillance video may also assist police in finding whoever pulled the trigger.
"There are some people here that may have seen something but we aren't 100 percent sure but again, we're talking with them for any information they do have and hopefully that leads us to the person that committed this crime," Mitchell said.
Police have not released a description of the shooter or a motive.
Anyone with information should call 574-LMPD.
