Firefighters battle flames at Lanesville, Indiana business

LANESVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) - A southern Indiana business is shut down by fire and the owner says it's something he never expected.

"I'm out here trying to figure out what happened.  I'm a little bit in shock," said Ron Zipp, who owns Southern Indiana Equipment in Harrison County.

The Lanesville location that's been in business for 10 years specializes in lawn equipment like mowers, weed eaters and chainsaws.

Just before noon Saturday, one of Zipp's employees reported a big problem.

"Got a phone call from one of my employees saying 'you've got a fire and this is serious,'" Zipp said.  "I basically told them to get the fire extinguisher and put it out and they said, ‘no it's much worse than you can imagine.'”

Zipp left his other store location and when he got closer to Lanesville noticed the smoke from the highway.

He was in shock.  Part of his business had been destroyed.  Zipp stood outside in the cold watching crews get things under control.  His employees called him right after they called 911.

"Two of them said they heard a small explosion which like rattled the wall and the parts department which connects to the service,” Zipp said. “They looked out and saw that there was already fire climbing up the wall so they called 911, and by the time the fire department got here the whole wall was in flames and it was going through the roof."

Zipp doesn't believe any chemicals were in the area where it started, but a fire wall saved the front part of his business.

"And then we lost our whole parts inventory,” he said.  “Any parts that we have in stock to repair and service the equipment that we sell."

Zipp says his Sellersburg location is still open, and he hopes to have the Lanesville shop up and running by the spring rush on April 1.
