New, safer football helmet unveiled at national convention in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A national convention is in Louisville this weekend, and a new, safer football helmet is on display.

Schutt Sports and Brain Sentry debuted the new helmet at the National American Football Coaches Association Convention on Sunday.

The new helmet tracks head impacts in real-time over the course of a whole season.

"Just like in baseball they count pitches to try to protect kids' arms, this technology counts head impacts and allows coaches to identify which players are excessively hitting with their heads," said Greg Merril, CEO of Brain Sentry.

The censors will be installed on all new and reconditioned Schutt helmets for the 2015 football season.

The AFCA convention continues Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kentucky International Convention Center downtown.
