LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Three days ago, a mother lost her son. The little boy's death was allegedly caused by his father, and she said it was the first time he'd seen his son in four years.

"I didn't expect this to happen," said Amanda Dukes, referring to the death of her 4-year-old son Hayden. "I figured my son would just go to his dad's for the weekend and then come back."

Investigators say Hayden's father, 27-year-old Christopher Bruck, was watching TV at his home in Clark County, Indiana when the little boy tried to get his attention, but was hit.

"I got the call from his dad,” Dukes said. “And his dad said that he had had a seizure. I said, ‘Chris, my son doesn't have seizures. What do you mean he had a seizure?'”

Two different times on his way into the courtroom, Bruck denied it.

"I didn't hurt him," he said. “I'm pleading not guilty."

Hayden's family posted pictures of his progress on Facebook.

"And the last time I seen, Hayden I got to kiss him and they took him into emergency surgery," Dukes said.

Four days later the little boy died.

"There was no chance of him surviving because of what his dad did to him," Dukes said.

There was a lot of community support for Hayden's mom Sunday afternoon. She says the hugs and kisses help her heal.

"It makes me feel really good,” she said. “But it's not going to bring back my son. Nothing's every going to bring back my son.

"He was a very sweet little boy and the family asks that God gives us the strength to get through these next few days," Hayden's aunt said.

Family and friends released balloons in Hayden's memory, hoping his laughter and smile never fade from theirs.

"It's been a really rough time and we hope that justice is served."

Bruck is in the Clark County Jail charged with aggravated battery, but that charge could be upgraded now that Hayden died.

Hayden's funeral is set for Tuesday.
