LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Almost a year after being forced out of its downtown location, the Center for Women and Families is renovating.

A leaky roof on the 70,000 square foot building caused extensive damage at the Center last year. It forced more than 100 staff members and residents to relocate.

“This is the emergency plan we all have we never, ever want to implement,” said President and CEO Marta Miranda. “It has been the challenge of my 40 year career and I don't say that lightly”.

Miranda says the Center was able to relocate all programs, offices and shelters without missing a day of service.

Crews began repairing the roof in June and are now in the demolition phase.

Meanwhile, the Center has been working on a plan to reconfigure its 'hub.' The new floor plan includes more communal and individual space, private entrances for clients, and for the first time, rooms for men seeking shelter.

“This building will now support the work as opposed to us having to work around the building,” said Miranda.

Miranda says the price tag for that 'huge shift' is $6 million. So far the Center has raised about a million and anticipates insurance will cover a small amount. She says they are now counting on the public.

“We need the community to do the $25, $50 or $100,” said Miranda. “To show us now that we're homeless that they can help us, help the community.”

The organization hopes to be back in the building by June. If you would like to donate, visit http://www.thecenteronline.org.
