LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man has been sentenced to two years in jail for beating a 3-year-old boy.

Monday was an emotional day in court for the boy's mother.

Christi Elliot was very upset inside the courtroom Monday afternoon. She presented a letter to the judge during sentencing. It was from a CPS investigation and stated that her son was a victim of a violent physical assault -- an assault authorities say was committed by Steven Wright.

Wright pleaded guilty to child abuse and wanton endangerment.

Elliot says her now ex-boyfriend was babysitting her 3-year old son, Cain, back in October. When she got home she found bruises all over his head and neck.

Wright initially said their 8-month-old puppy hurt Cain, but authorities say an investigation revealed it was him. Wright's attorney requested four years of probation, but the judge put him behind bars for two years.

"With this type of charge, if I was just to immediately to put you on probation, it kind of does unduly depreciate the seriousness of this," said Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Mary Shaw. "I'm going to go ahead and sentence you to the two years. "

Elliot says Cain is doing okay now. His bruises have faded, but he's not the same boy he once was.

Wright can still file a motion for shock probation.
