Non-profit organization using local medical supplies for shipment to Mali

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thousands of dollars in medical supplies normally headed for a local landfill will instead be put to good use.

A Louisville warehouse is filled from floor to ceiling with boxes of surgical gloves, drapes, syringes and even wheelchairs.

The non-profit Supplies Over Seas partners with hospitals and other groups to collect items that won't be used domestically, to send to those in need of the supplies.

About $120,000 worth of surplus supplies are now being shipped to Mali in West Africa to replace items destroyed in recent conflicts.

The foundation has several areas of focus to help restore the country, one of which is healthcare.

"Surplus happens for many reasons, could be over-ordering, change of supplier, could be medical surgery tray where one doctor only used five items on a tray and another doctor used 30," explained Supplies Over Seas president Melissa Mershon.

The first of five containers headed to Mali was sent out Tuesday.
