East End Bridge taking shape at Harrod's Creek and River Road

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Imagine a massive construction project taking place right outside your backdoor. Some residents have a front seat view of the progress of the East End Bridge.

Jeff Cooper has lived in Transylvania Beach for 19 years. But, the East End Bridge project is changing his view.

"We have beautiful sunsets," Cooper said. "It won't be that way anymore because of the bridge."

Construction continues in his backyard. Cooper says he and his neighbors had fought the East End Bridge project from the beginning. Now, he says they're dealing with bright lights at night and constant beeping... but he's working with the construction crews to resolve those issues.

Cooper says the beeping, "That right there tends to get on your nerves. That comes right through the walls when you are watching TV. It sounds like your alarm clock so you don't know when your alarm clock is going off."

Sunshine on Monday highlighted major progress at Harrod's Creek at River Road. Dan Hartlage with WVB East End Partners says, "There is 8.5 miles of road being built, a lot of it right here."

"Essentially you are seeing some resemblance of a bridge," Hartlage said. "The extension of Kentucky 841 is coming out of the hillside, essentially coming out of the north portal of the tunnel. It will be crossing over Harrod's Creek and crossing over the river."

Approximately 350 - 400 people are working on the project.

The blasting on the tunnel is halted until next month after debris fell from the ceiling last September. Hartlage says, "It was decided to err on the side of caution and build reinforcements in terms of steel and concrete throughout the tunnel. So it will now be a steel and concrete shell on the inside."

Work on the two foundations and towers in the Ohio River will continue into 2015.

Dan Hartlage says, "There's a lot of changes in Indiana. State Road 62, State Road 265 interchange, Port Road which intersects in there, all of that is drastically changed."

Cooper says, "In the plans, you couldn't really tell the exact extent of it, but now it's becoming more and more clear of what it's going to be."

The East End Bridge is expected to be finished in October of 2016.
