Kentucky State Police says there's a shortage of troopers on the force

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Officials with the Kentucky State Police say there is a shortage of troopers at the agency.

The agency says its staff is short by about 100 troopers.

The problem is due in part to retiring officers and challenges with recruitment. Another factor adding to the shortfall is troopers who leave Kentucky State Police to work for other agencies.

There are currently just over 900 troopers on the force. That number includes nearly 70 new trainees.
