KONZ | Jeremy Renner named new principal at Goldsmith Elementary School

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky, (WDRB) -- A longtime Jefferson County educator -- not the famous actor -- has been named the new principal at Goldsmith Elementary School.

Jeremy Renner, who has been Goldsmith's assistant principal since 2012, was chosen by the school's site-based decision making council on Monday to replace Jane Jones, who is retiring. The move was approved by Superintendent Donna Hargens on Tuesday.

"Goldsmith has meant a lot to me for many years and I am humbled and thrilled to take over as principal on Monday," Renner told WDRB News on Tuesday. "This truly is a wonderful school and the community is amazing. I wouldn't want to spend my days anywhere else."

Renner came to Jefferson County Public Schools in 1999 and taught at Gilmore Lane and Goldsmith elementaries, as well as a technology resource teacher at Shawnee High School, before going to work in central office as a districtwide computer education support specialist.

He has been a leader when it comes to using social media to help communicate student and teacher work. Goldsmith has a Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest account.

"He has a lot of experience and knows the students, parents and staff very well," said Michelle Dillard, an assistant superintendent of academics who oversees Goldsmith Elementary. "It was a natural fit for him to be the new principal and we are excited to see what he will be able to do."

The school, located on Goldsmith Lane in Hikes Point (next to Seneca High School), offers the international/cultural studies and language program. It has a very diverse student population, including families from more than 50 different countries. Twenty-six percent of students are non-native English speakers and about 80 percent qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

Renner, whose Twitter handle is @JeremyRenner, says fans of the famous actor often send him tweets asking for autographs.

"We actually have a mutual friend, which makes it even more interesting at times," he said with a laugh.

There are a few more principal openings that are in the process of being filled:

Ballard High School: Jim Jury was named the new principal at Louisville Male High School earlier this month. JCPS has posted the position, applications are due Feb. 8.

Alex Kennedy Elementary School: This new school in Jeffersontown will open this fall. JCPS has posted the position, applications are due Feb. 14. Hargens will be the one to select the principal, since the school does not yet have a site-based council.

Phoenix School of Discovery: David Bennett retired in October. Mark Sauer, a retired administrator, has been serving as interim principal. Applications for this job have closed and Hargens is expected to appoint a new principal to this school soon.

Maupin Elementary: The school is closing and then reopening as a School of Innovation this fall. Applications for this job have closed and Hargens is expected to appoint a new principal to this school soon.
