LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say the number of high risk search warrants LMPD SWAT has served this month is unusually high.

"Anytime we do search warrants, there is a risk matrix that's done by a sergeant on that particular unit. If it meets a certain point, category one, then the SWAT team comes in. They've had about 18 warrants they've served, high risk, and most of them with no incidents beyond making their arrests. It may be high for this month. The year will ultimately tell how that really goes but this month it has been," said LM PD Spokesperson Dwight Mitchell.

He says that's why a risk assessment is done before any warrant is served.

"We try to do as much intelligence as we can up front to know what we might be confronting when we go inside," he said.

They were serving a warrant at a house on S. 35th Street. Police say when officers entered, the suspect, 22 year-old Rohmel Ross, shot at them.

Ross is accused of trying to kill six police officers.

"Once they got inside the home, the individual inside the home retrieved a hand gun and and shot at SWAT team members," confirmed Mitchell.

Fortunately, police say the bullet didn't hit any officers and no other shots were fired.

Ross was arrested and charged with six counts of attempted murder.

Inside the house, in addition to drugs, police say they found a .40 caliber Glock, a loaded AK-47 rifle and assorted ammo -- making for a potentially deadly situation.

"It could have been, but we're thankful that it was not," he told WDRB.
