LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville City announced the signing of former Chicago Fire player Matthew Fondy today. Fondy, a forward -- and one of the team's marquee signings -- will likely play a key role in James O'Connor's attacking formation.

Matthew Fondy is a native of northern California and was a 2009 NSCAA Division III All-American at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Fondy began his professional career in the USL-Pro with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2011, before going on to play with the Los Angeles Blues in 2012-2013.

He was a late addition to Chivas USA's roster in August of 2013 -- in his debut game, he took the pitch in front of 38,000 fans on the road in Seattle.

Even in his short tenure with Chivas USA, Fondy was called a fan favorite and impressed the CUSA faithful with his intensity on a team that sometimes lacked it.

Fondy never scored in the MLS -- though his minutes were usually off the bench -- ultimately leading Chivas to waive him in June.

About a week later, he was picked up by the Chicago Fire who were eager to put him in the same role. But as Fondy's goal drought continued, his contract was not renewed at the end of the season.

He played in eight games for the Chicago Fire in 2014 -- including an appearance in an international friendly against English Premier League's Tottenham Hotspur.

“Matt is an incredibly talented forward who will make an immediate impact leading our attack this season,” head coach James O'Connor said. “He's had a taste of the MLS and is someone who is capable of playing at that level. I've admired his work ethic and passion for the game, and am extremely excited to have him with us for our inaugural season.”

Fondy joins Conor Shanosky as the second player to have signed with Louisville City FC with Major League Soccer experience.

The USL-Pro team will take the pitch at Louisville Slugger Field in March. The league has sent out a draft of the 2015 schedule, which will be finalized and announced in the next couple days.

Meanwhile, Louisville City is slated to start pre-season on March 16.

Rounding out the ever-growing roster at the moment are forward Kadeem Dacres, midfielders Juan Guzman and Guy Abend and defenders Adam West and Sean Reynolds.
