LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man is shot and killed in the Russell Neighborhood and police are still looking for a suspect. Louisville

Metro Police say the shooting happened around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. When they arrived on scene they say the victim was dead and the shooter was already gone.

It was an emotional day for friends and family as they crossed police tape after learning their loved one was shot and killed.

“He's a good guy, we all love him. Just don't know right now what caused all this,” Dennis Smith told WDRB News.

LMPD was called to the Russell Apartments at the corner of South 18th Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd.

“When officers arrived they found a black male in the hallway that apparently had been shot,” said LMPD Spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

Police say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. They also say it's unclear if he was a resident of the apartment or just visiting someone.

Family friend, Dennis Smith, says he was just with the victim on Saturday for his mother's birthday.

“We had a good birthday for her and now this happens. We still don't understand pretty much what's going on,” said Smith.

He says he can't believe how things can change in the blink of an eye. One day they're having a party - another day they're huddling around police tape.

“It's just so shocking that this happened in three days - in broad daylight,” said Smith.

Bishop Dennis V. Lyons with the Voice of Louisville says the community needs to be motivated by peace.

“I thought we had a few days of rest from the violence, but it continues on,” Lyons told WDRB News.

Lyons adds that Wednesday's shooting is an example of how things will never change if there is no partnership.

“We have to get unity in the community,” said Lyons.

The LMPD homicide unit is investigating the deadly shooting and actively looking for the suspect. Police ask that if you have any information regarding this shooting to call the anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD.
