Date set for official debut of Big Four Bridge lights

LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- Leaders with the Waterfront Development Corporation say their plan for brightening up the Big Four bridge is almost complete.

“Many years ago as we were getting ready to do this bridge,” said Waterfront Development Corporation President David Karem, “People began looking at some of these types of projects around the country and around the world.”

That's where the idea for the light system on the Big Four Bridge came from. That idea will turn into a reality on Feb. 11.

“Starting on February 11th,” said Karem, “If everything keeps going okay, and all the different fixtures work properly, we'll have a formal lighting of the bridge.”

According to the Waterfront Development corporation, the 1500 new lights will be tested on and off throughout the rest of this week. They say the goal of the testing this week is to get kinks out of the system. All of the lights are tied together by a computer system that can create motion and different effects with the lights.

“On Valentine's Day you might want more interactive red, Halloween you can do orange colors,” said Karem.

Meanwhile, those who have used the bridge while the lights have been tested have mixed feelings.

“They're attractive but it's not that important,” says Peter Naake, “We all like the fact that you can walk on it, the bridge and you can see the river. I like that aspect of it.”
