LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Stopher Elementary teacher Lauren Eason was named the latest recipient of the Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership Award by Jefferson County Public Schools on Tuesday.

Eason is a primary teacher and instruction coach at the school, 14417 Aiken Road.

Principal Brigitte Owens says Eason is "at the top of the teaching profession."

"Her professionalism inside the classroom as well as her interactions with colleagues always demonstrate dignity, kindness and fairness," Owens said in a prepared statement.

District officials, along with the award's sponsors – LG&E and WHAS-TV – presented Eason with the award during a ceremony at the school. The award comes with a $1,000 instructional grant from LG&E.

Eason earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education at the University of Louisville and a master's degree at Georgetown College. She began her teaching career in 1992 at Bondurant Middle School in Franklin County.

She began teaching in JCPS in 2000 at Price Elementary School before arriving at Stopher in 2008 as a fourth grade teacher.

Eason became the school's primary talent pool teacher in 2011.

The talent pool consists of students who demonstrate high academic potential, and Eason's accomplishments include developing screening and testing protocols as well as collaborating with other district schools to implement the talent pool program, Owens said.

The district's Excellence in Classroom and Educational Leadership (ExCEL) are awards that recognize exemplary teaching in JCPS. Five more teachers will be surprised with awards during the 2014-15 year.

You can still nominate a teacher for the ExCEL award, the deadline is Friday, Feb. 6. (Here is a PDF of the nomination form).
