LMPD officer charged with assaulting wife after Super Bowl party appears in court

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- The LMPD officer accused of violently assaulting his wife in Clark County, Indiana, after a Super Bowl party was in court Thursday.

Jonathan Osborne remains free on a $30,000 bond, but appeared in a Clark County courtroom for his initial hearing. Osborne told us he had no comment as he walked into court.

Osborne is charged with battery, attempted battery, resisting law enforcement and criminal mischief. A judge entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.

The Clark County Sheriff's office says Osborne attacked his wife while she was driving near Sellersburg Sunday night. Police say she lost control of the vehicle after he punched her and veered off the road, crashing into a tractor and a building.

WDRB News has obtained audio of the calls that came into 911.

"We just witnessed an accident and then we pulled over to see if they were okay and this guy just punched her and got her down her down on the ground and he won't leave her alone so my boyfriend had to restrain him," a witness told dispatchers.

The Clark County Sheriff's Office says Osborne punched and kicked his wife, fought with the man who stepped in, and tried to spit on officers as he was taken into custody.

He's since been suspended without pay from the Louisville Metro Police Department. The chief said he made that decision after watching surveillance video of what happened.

"We're not fighting what the video shows," said Osborne's attorney, Bart Betteau. "The video shows what in fact, exactly happened, what it doesn't show is why it happened."

Betteau says his client has never been accused of being physically abusive before.

"There's a lot more than what people see in that video or have read in the police report. There's a lot of other things going on. We have something that we could certainly present to a jury that would in fact make him not guilty of these offenses if we choose to do that," Betteau told reporters.

He would not give any further details about the information or evidence he mentioned.

Osborne's wife was hospitalized after the attack, but the Clark County sheriff's office tells us she has been released from the hospital. They she's believed to have suffered a broken arm.

Osborne has been ordered to have no contact with his wife.

His LMPD personnel file reveals that he was cleared in an officer-involved shooting that happened in 2008. He's also received several commendations.
