Proposed statewide smoking ban passes Ky. House committee

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A statewide smoking ban has cleared its first hurdle in Frankfort.

The House Health and Welfare Committee approved a bill on Thursday that would prohibit smoking at workplaces and public buildings.

The measure faces stiff opposition from some lawmakers who represent tobacco-growers -- but it has gained bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.

"As a physician and now as a senator, I feel that it is one of the most important issues for Kentucky to address in the General Assembly," said Sen. Ralph Alvarado of Winchester, Kentucky. "As individuals and as a commonwealth, we must do more to reduce smoking -- or at least Kentucky can ensure that the rights of those who don't smoke are protected."

The bill's sponsor, Susan Westrom of Lexington, says she's confident it can pass the House if it comes up for a vote.
