Federal gov't giving TARC $3 million to increase fleet of electric busses

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The federal government has unveiled a major national project right here in Louisville -- and we'll see an immediate impact.

The Federal Transit Administration is giving TARC $3 million to increase its fleet of electric buses. Ten of them started running in January, and now Louisville will get five more Zero Buses. It's part of a $55 million nationwide program to put more non-polluting buses on roads across the country.

"The new fleet is expected to reduce admission by two-thirds and save more than $300,000 a year in maintenance and fuel costs compared to trolleys they replaced," said Carolyn Flowers of the Federal Transit Administration.

The busses are free for the public to use.
