Popular New Albany business auctions entire inventory

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) – An auctioneer rapidly calls out bids before selling numerous antiques.

It may sound like a foreign language to some, but for a building full of people, it's a chance to get one last piece of Aunt Arties Antique Mall

“It's awful crowded,” said James Phillips, “I wanted to come down and see if I could find something.”

Aunt Arties has been a staple of downtown New Albany for years. The owners closed up shop almost two months ago but this weekend the entire inventory is being auctioned off.

“One piece that's going to go on the auction block today is that atomic missile pedal car that's from like the late 50's,” former manager Judith Heazlitt told WDRB News.

Other collectibles like rings, earrings, and necklaces as well as china and small trinkets cover long white tables as people search for that perfect item.

“I found a 1964 Derby glass,” said Phillips.

At three stories tall, Heazlitt says it was one of the largest antique malls in southern Indiana.

“We have people from all over the country come here on a weekly basis,” said Heazlitt.

She says it's a big loss for the community.

“Well I'm very sad about it for many different points of view,” said Heazlitt.

One reason is that there are more treasures than just the items inside the store.

“I really am just going to miss the people more than anything,” said Heazlitt.

So as the final hours for antique shopping wrap up at Aunt Arties, shoppers are making the most of what will soon be a memory.

“It's a bittersweet moment. It's been something that people have enjoyed coming to and it's nice to be able to take a part of it away,” said Brian Marshall.

The final day of the auction is Sunday starting at noon.

The new owners of the building plan to open several retail shops in the former antique mall.
