Experts warn residents to take precautions against extreme cold

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Doctors have issued a warning about the low temperatures and snow.

They say this kind of cold can cause airway spasms and dangerous flare-ups for asthma and emphysema patients.

Louisville and surrounding areas received 6-11 inches of snowfall Monday, and meteorologists expect temperatures to tumble next, hitting record-breaking lows.

The message for people digging out: take breaks often because your heart is working harder than you know.

"When people are shoveling snow they're doing much more cardiac workload than what they are accustomed to, and so it's well described that people have heart attacks because of shoveling snow," said Dr. Lorrel Brown, a cardiologist with U of L Physicians. "That's a warning that we give people very commonly."

Doctors are also reminding people to cover up exposed skin when shoveling snow.

Frostbite can set-in in 30 minutes in extreme cold.
