Report: Sen. Paul could soon announce plans for presidential run

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Senator Rand Paul could announce his plans to run for President as early as April 7.

The New York Times is reporting that people close to Paul are saying an early announcement would put him ahead of his potential Republican rivals. It would allow him to begin raising money directly for his campaign 10 months before the Iowa caucuses.

Paul still has to resolve how he can run for both President and Senator at the same time. He's already announced he'll run again for U.S. Senate.

State law in Kentucky bars candidates from seeking two offices at one time; however, it may be possible for Paul to run for president and the U.S. Senate at the same time.If Paul also runs for president, his name will appear twice on the ballot, which is not allowed under Kentucky law. To get around this, Paul is asking the state Republican party to hold a presidential caucus instead of a primary in 2016.

If the party simply chooses Paul as its presidential nominee, he would only appear on the Kentucky ballot once, as a U.S. Senate candidate.

His Senate term is up in 2016.
