JCPS donates 5,000 uneaten meals to Louisville charities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- JCPS may be out of school for the week, but the district is not letting thousands of uneaten meals go to waste.

So JCPS is donating more than 5,000 thousand meals to 10 local charities. The boxes were unloaded this morning at Wayside Christian Mission on Preston Street.

The food is part of the Child and Adult Care Food Program that provides meals and snacks for after school hours.

"Friday we had prepped these meals in anticipating of school on Monday," said JCPS Nutrition Service Center Manager Dan Ellnor. "Of course we didn't have school and as the week went on, we started discussions considering what we're going to do with these guys. And so rather than throwing them in the garbage I contacted the USDA and got authorization to donate them."

Many of the meals will be going to Dare to Care.
