JCPS preparing, hoping for Monday return to class for 101,000 students

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Approximately 50-60 bus drivers and mechanics in Jefferson County Public Schools reported to work Sunday morning to check on the district's buses.

Officials will also be out Sunday afternoon checking bus routes and road conditions in subdivisions across the county.

The district's buses have been sitting at 13 compounds across Louisville since Feb. 13. Snow, cold weather and poor road conditions closed schools all last week.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said Saturday city crews were working with JCPS officials to clear "key school routes."

District officials say they are hoping the district's 101,000 students will return to their classes on Monday.

"Student safety is always our top concern," Superintendent Donna Hargens said.

About 70,000 of the district's students ride 975 buses daily.

So far, the district has had six snow days. Makeup days are as follows: Feb. 27, March 9, April 2, April 3, May 29 and June 1.
