Legislature endorses moves to shorten ISTEP testing time

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Legislators have given their approval to steps that will reduce the time needed for students to take Indiana's standardized test this year.

The state Senate voted 50-0 Monday afternoon in favor of the proposal, just hours after the House unanimously approved it. Those votes send it on to Gov. Mike Pence, who has supported the actions.

The bill allows some steps that state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz proposed to shave at least three hours from the revamped ISTEP+ exam. The revamped test previously was to have taken students about 12 hours.

The time-saving steps including waiving the state law requiring the Indiana Department of Education to release non-multiple choice or true/false questions for parents to review. That will reduce the number of required pilot questions.
