PITINO: I "feel awful" for Chris Jones, but it's time to move on

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U of L head coach Rick Pitino has spoken out on the decision to dismiss U of L basketball player Chris Jones after Jones was accused of threatening to smack a female student.

Pitino says Jones has to speak for himself now because he is not coming back.

"I feel awful for the young man," Pitino said. "But there are certain rules that you can run people, and there are other rules that you just can't -- you've got to move on. And unfortunately, we just have to move on. You don't like to see -- it's like your children: you don't like to see anybody be hurt."

We've also learned the former player is involved in a second investigation that's still open.

As for this case, a University Police run report says a woman, who's been in a relationship with Jones, went to his apartment Tuesday around midnight, but he left.

She waited for him, but ended up leaving at around 3:00 in the morning after "messing up" his room.

The report says that afternoon -- Jones texted the woman saying he would "smack" her. The text also had an expletive. That same day, the university announced Jones was suspended.

The woman told police she didn't want to press charges but preferred someone to talk to Jones about his behavior.

Jones was reinstated after the Syracuse game, and played against Miami on Saturday.

Sunday, he was dismissed from the team. U of L has not disclosed the exact reasons for either the suspension or dismissal.
