Truck driver charged with hit and run following California train accident

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A truck driver has been charged with hit and run after officials say he caused a train accident in California.

Police say the driver left his truck on the tracks Tuesday afternoon and fled.

The man was located more than a mile away.

Officers say the man mistook the train tracks for a highway and tried to turn onto them.

Officials no longer say the truck was stuck on the tracks as investigators first believed.

Police say the train engineer saw the truck and hit the brakes, but it wasn't enough time to stop.

"I was in the second car and I actually flew past the first car. (There's) A lot of shock, but just that we were alive was the main thing. It's not like an airplane where it goes down and everybody is gone. We're glad to be here," said Joel Bingham, a passenger on the train.

Authorities say nearly 30 people were hurt.
