Dashcam video captures moment three are thrown from SUV on Ky. highway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dashcam video captured the moment three people -- including a 5-year-old boy -- thrown from a SUV on a Kentucky highway.

Police say it's a miracle they all survived.

The video was taken from an 18-wheeler on I-75 northbound in Grant County. In it, you can see a Mountaineer drift from the left lane, all the way to the right lane, and nearly hit the semi in front of it. That's when it happens: the driver loses control and the SUV flips multiple times. Three people were thrown out because police say they weren't wearing seat belts.

At one point, the 5-year-old boy is thrown out and the truck lands on top of him, breaking both of his legs.

"Of course as a parent, and being in this profession, the worst of the worst runs through your mind," said Deputy Sheriff Scott Conrad of the Grant County Sheriff's Department.

Conrad investigated the accident. He was surprised anyone survived.

"The softness of the ground may have contributed to softer landings," he said. "It was very soft to walk on from the weather that we have had."

Conrad points out that this could have been tragic and preventing most accidents is simple.

"Your priority is driving that vehicle," he said. "It's not putting on make-up. It's not shaving. It's not reading the papers. It's not reading your book. It's concentrating on the roadway and the other motorists and arriving at your destination safely."
