Wedding day wish comes true early for father with stage four cancer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hugh Campbell's dying wish is to walk his only daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.

Although the wedding isn't until October, that dream came true Friday.

With her arm around his, he walked his daughter down the aisle in her wedding dress surrounded by family and friends.

"We are gathered here to bear witness to the love between a daughter and her father," said Norton's chaplain Katie Anderson when they arrived at the end of the isle.

But it's a love that could be cut short.

"His disease has progressed and there is a possibility that he may not get to walk his beloved daughter down the aisle at her wedding," Anderson explained to those gathered for the ceremony.

That's why Hugh Campbell and his only daughter, Emily, celebrated a special pre-wedding ceremony.

Hugh has stage four breast cancer. A disease most men don't think they can get -- and one he has been battling for seven years.

"I spend every moment that I'm not with my fiance, with my dad," Emily said.

"If I go fishing, she goes fishing. If i go to a ball game, she goes to a ball game," Hugh echoed. "We do concerts together, we do everything together."

And her Wedding day would be no different.

Although Hugh is praying he can make it to his daughter's wedding in October, doctors don't know if that will happen.

"If that is the case and I am not here in October, you can replay this day and I will not only be right there watching over you from heaven, but you can say my daddy did get to walk me down the aisle," Anderson said during the ceremony, speaking for Hugh Campbell.

There was not a dry eye in the chapel as those words were spoken for Hugh.

"Gives me something to reflect on when my wedding comes and even if he is still here, its a great memory for us to have together," she said.

A memory of a dance with her dad that she prays will happen again.

"I love you and you better keep up the fight," Emily said to her father. "October is only eight months away."

The only thing missing from today's pre-wedding was the groom.

Emily said she didn't want her fiance to see her in her dress until October.
