"Plarning" for the homeless: Louisville group makes mats out of plastic bags

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 20 people with Compassionate Creations made "plarn" or plastic yarn out of plastic bags on Saturday afternoon.

The plarn is then crocheted into sleeping mats for the homeless.

The organization has been making the water-resistant mats for about a year and says it takes up to 1,000 bags and 50 hours to make just one mat.

Founder Lynette Lee, says she started this projected because she was looking to make the world a better place.

"The homeless don't have a choice sometimes, and they have to sleep outside," Lee said. "Making it a little more comfortable for them or having them realize that somebody cares enough to put lots of hours and love and sweat and heart into this."

Compassionate Creations meets every fourth Saturday of the month at Good Garbage in Louisville.
