Going bald for Baldrick's

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 100 people were brave enough this evening to completely shave their heads at Our Lady of Lourdes in Louisville.

In doing so, they beat a fundraising record for money that will be donated to pediatric cancer.

Although cancer is a word no child or parent ever wants to hear, the sound of buzzing razors means steps are being taken to find a cure.

“I haven't seen it yet so it will be a little scary I'm sure,” said Jayson Brunstetter as his head was shaved.

For the 125 heads shaved, money has been raised for childhood cancer research.

According to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the money raised at Bearcats for Baldrick's makes this one of the top ten events in the country.

Every dollar that's raised, every single dollar helps support the research that hopefully one day find a cure for childhood cancer,” said Mariela Castillo with St. Baldrick's.

According to Castillo, this event brings to light that every three minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer.

“When you think about children sick and dying, it's hard, no one wants to hear about it, it hurts,” said Becca Macgilvray.

But to take away some of the pain, the simple act of shaving of a head can make a world of difference.

“To see the kids coming out of school with all the shaved heads, to me that's just so touching. To see the kids that have done it for all these other kids that don't have a choice when they lose their hair,” said Doug Nielsen.

Proving that they aren't fighting their battle alone... and that one day they might hear they are cancer free.

Organizers say the even raised more than $100,000.
