LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A teen is dead, after being struck by a car in East Louisville on Monday night.

The victim was identified on Tuesday as 17-year-old Zachary Mitchell of Louisville, according to Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley.

It happened at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday near the intersection of Westport Road and Springhurst Boulevard. LMPD says a car headed west on Westport Road hit and killed Mitchell, who was crossing the street. Zachary was a student at the Academy for Individual Excellence, a private pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade school in Jeffersontown.

"Zack's teachers and fellow students are grieving his loss today," said John Savage, executive director of the Academy for Individual Excellence. "Our hearts were broken when we heard about the tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family. They are in our thoughts and prayers."

Savage said the school provided a counseling session with all the students Tuesday morning. "We are also offering individual counseling to faculty and students who request it," he said.

Police talked with the driver and say they don't expect to file any charges. Investigators say the car had the green light at the time of the accident.

LMPD Spokesman Dwight Mitchell said, "Officers are investigating at this point. As far as any factors at this point, we're still in the very early stages of the investigation, and we're not ruling any factors out."

Authorities say Mitchell's family may have witnessed the accident.
