U.S. officials working to strengthen White House security

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - U.S. officials say three intruders have tried to gain entry into the White House in less than 24 hours.

Talks have shifted to what can be done to better protect President Obama and the first family.

During a November hearing, months after a man illegally entered into the East Room of the White House with a knife, Secret Service officials offered their ideas to lawmakers.

"A higher fence would certainly help us, and we are looking for ways and options. In fact, we have we hope to have some renderings, some drawing, some options for people to look at," said Joseph Clancy, Acting Director for the Secret Service.

Some people say nothing can be done presently, because of the stalemate over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

Legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security is heading back to the House on Tuesday.

A temporary extension to keep the department open expires on Friday.
