LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Jeffersontown Fire Department is one of the best in the country, according to its new Public Protection Classification.

The grade is given by the Insurance Services Offices and takes into account four primary factors: emergency communication, water supply, training and divergence.

On Tuesday, the department announced that it had been awarded the distinguished Class 1 status -- the highest level possible.

Only 98 of 48,000 firehouses across the country have earned the distinction.

"There's a lot of different things they grade you on, and some things we don't have control on, such as hydrant placements, we don't have control on communications with MetroSafe, but those areas also gave a great score," Jeffersontown Fire Chief Sean Dreisbach said.

The new status is good for Jeffersontown residents as the price for fire insurance can be much lower if the neighborhood fire department has been given a good rating.
