Family escapes burning home on Watterson Trail

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A family was able to get out safely as a fire their home on Watterson Trail near Bardstown Road.

Firefighters responded to the call around 1:40 Friday morning.  Three adults and six children were inside the home, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair who needed help getting to the front of the building.  No one was injured, but a pet was lost in the fire.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the basement and the flames burned the first floor, only allowing crews to fight the flames from outside.
The house was heavily damaged, and firefighters say it will have to be rebuilt.

Fire crews say the hydrant in front of the home was frozen when they arrived and had to be deiced.  They say there is two feet of water in the basement. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
